For my birthday one year she planted a dozen each cab sauvignon, nebbiolo, and malbec expecting to come back in 6 months and make wine. I later did a soil analysis and found we are potassium deficient. I added some cab franc (which actually grows here as does the malbec)merlot and petite verdot and was given two barbera vines (which grows here),
Fast forward four years to our second harvest, making ecvery mistake you can.
But don't give up hope. I am originally from Hudson, NY and now live in southeastern Vermont. I have been making wine for 20 years and was blessed to have my grandfather's equipment to use when I started too, although the oak barrels weren't really in very good shape. I like what you said about your ancestors because every year I make wine it reminds me of my Italian grandfathers and my father's house and the wonderful smells and of course the fruit flies. Over the last few years we are still getting red grapes from California (a market down in Hartford, Ct sells them) but my wife and I have been going to the Finger Lakes to get our whites, because the juice is so fresh and fruity and I think my whites are coming out better because of it. I get a lot of my winemaking supplies from Hennessey over in Renselaer as I just stop in on my way to see my folks in Hudson. Again, thanks for the article and the blog - and hope you have a good vintage- Pete Nero
